STUDIO DESIGN

Driven by the pace of Montreal’s creativity, this year’s edition of the Fashion and Design Festival launches its Studio Design concept, marking Montreal’s 5th anniversary as a Unesco City of Design. Studio Design is a circuit consisting of original participatory or contemplative design stations.  Festivalgoers are invited to simply look or enter into an experience designed by some of Canada’s most imaginative creators.

Studio Design reappropriates homegrown design on behalf of Montrealers.

Studio 1:1

The “White Room” is an artefact, a portal into a world of technological chaos. This is a tool that attempts to raise public awareness to the increasing influence of technology in everyday life. The views of architects Kira Varvanina and Edward Lin are expressed in a container that houses the grids of old TV sets. The coldness of the space, its lack of animation mocks contemporary technological dependence and its unquestioned acceptance. The installation also questions our perception of an architectural environment as a space consisting of physical boundaries.

BRUT DESIGN

Like nature, Brut Design adapts to its environment and creates decorative accessories using locally available materials and manufacturing waste. Quebec’s local fauna, flora and topography are at the core of Brut’s inspiration and its designs are a reflection of that imagery, carrying a regional imprint. Started five years ago, Brut Design seeks sustainability and community development by working with the local industry to produce its designs. Its goal is to reintroduce nature into the human landscape in order to minimize man’s industrial waste and reduce its toll on the environment.

Zïlon & Surface Jalouse

Zïlon & Surface Jalouse

It's a playful encounter between urban art and design. On one hand, you have Zilon, the urban artist performing on the Montreal and international scene for nearly 30 years and, on the other, Surface Jalouse, designers of unique works and furnishings. The combination of their talents takes the form of inspiring installations showcasing furniture featuring the imprint of Zilon's works thanks to a printing technique developed by Surface Jalouse. The public will also be invited to contribute to the décor of an exterior space in order to make creative expression accessible to all.

AQUAOVO

AQUAOVO

Noémie and Manuel Desrochers took on the challenge of coming up with an ecological solution to the problem of quality drinking water. Driven by an innovative spirit, they founded AQUAOVO, the Quebec company that developed the OVOPUR© filtration unit — the product of three years of R&D — combining aesthetics and respect for the environment.

This summer, in collaboration with Lacy Barry, the duo created an unusual and ecological “watering hole”, putting Aquaovo excellence at the service of festivalgoers, who will have the opportunity of refilling their reusable water bottles.

AQUAOVO: a celebration of water!
